In which sub-category of the OPEN category may a self-manufactured UAS be operated if it weighs 3 kg?

There is a distinction between self-manufactured certified and non-certified UAS. A self-manufactured UAS that is certified may only be operated in subcategory A3, as it is assigned to drone class C4.

If the UAS is not certified, it is categorised as an existing drone. As with all other existing drones, the following regulations will apply from 1 January 2024

  • < 250g: in subcategory A1 (without a licence, close to people, in residential areas)
  • > 250g: in subcategory A3 (with EU drone driving licence A1/A3, far away from people, 150m distance from residential, commercial and recreational areas)
