What is allowed in the OPEN category - and what is not?

The open category was introduced with the EU drone regulation and summarises all scenarios for drone flights that do not require permission from an authority. The following is permitted in the open category

  • maximum flight altitude of 120 metres above ground
  • Drones with a take-off weight of up to 900 g may fly directly towards uninvolved people(small EU drone licence required!)
  • Drones up to 4 kg take-off weight in slow flight mode up to 5 m from uninvolved people, otherwise 30 m(large EU drone licence required!)
  • Drones up to 25 kg take-off weight up to 150 m from uninvolved people (small EU drone licence required!)

The following is NOT permitted and therefore falls into the specific category requiring a licence (SPECIFIC category):

  • Flight beyond visual range
  • Flight over 120 metres above ground
  • Flight in the vicinity of an airport, industrial plant, motorway or main road (= examples of no-fly zones)
  • Flight that jeopardises the privacy of uninvolved people
  • Flight with drone take-off weight over 25kg
