Which standard scenarios (STS) are currently available for drones?

Among other things, the EU Drone Regulation has introduced the specific category (SPECIFIC Category) and its standard scenarios. These enable flights with increased risk without a complex risk assessment.

The following standard scenarios will be available from 3 December 2023

STS-01

Brief description: Within visual range in a populated area with C5 drone class.

  • Visual contact with the UAS: Yes, mandatory (= VLOS).
  • Ground area: Can be cordoned off and is under the control of the drone pilot. May be located in a populated region.
  • Airspace: Controlled or uncontrolled with a low risk of encountering a manned aircraft.
  • Maximum flight altitude: 120 metres.
  • CE class of the drone: C5 (maximum size of 3 m and maximum take-off weight MTOM up to 25 kg).

Please note: Certified drones of classes C5 and C6 are not yet available on the European market. However, we will publish the current status as soon as we have more information!

STS-02

Brief description: Out of visual range in a sparsely populated area with C6 drone class.

  • Visual contact with the UAS: Not required (= BVLOS) if the distance between remote pilot and drone does not exceed 1 km. a distance of 2 km is permitted if a helper is used (= EVLOS).
  • Ground area: Can be cordoned off and is under the control of the drone pilot. Located in a sparsely populated region.
  • Airspace: Controlled or uncontrolled with a low risk of encountering a manned aircraft.
  • Maximum flight altitude: 120 metres.
  • CE class of the drone: C6 (maximum size of 3 m and maximum take-off weight MTOM up to 25 kg).

Notes: "Controlled area" = This refers to an area in which you can ensure that no uninvolved persons can gain access.

Necessary certificates

The following certificates are required for the operation of both applications:

- STS remote pilot certificate (valid for 5 years) --> You can obtain this from us immediately in an informative training course. More information here.

- STS practical certificate (no expiry date) --> You can also come to us for training on the practical certificates. In one day, you will learn and try out everything about STS-01 and STS-02 in theory and practice.

- An operating manual and proof of insurance are also required.
