What must be observed for night flights? (EU Drone Regulation)

Night flying is permitted in the OPEN category. You must attach at least one green flashing light to your drone to be allowed to fly at night. The purpose of the flashing light is to enable people on the ground to recognise the drone. The green flashing light should therefore point downwards. In addition, the general operating categories A1/A2/A3 (max. 120 m, distance to people, etc.) must also be observed.

Legal basis:

  • "A green flashing light should be activated on unmanned aircraft so that unmanned aircraft flying at night are easier to recognise and, in particular, people on the ground can more easily distinguish the unmanned aircraft from a manned aircraft." (DVO 2020/636, reasons for the regulation)
  • "During the flight [...] if it is a night flight, the remote pilot must ensure that the green flashing light on the unmanned aircraft is switched on." (DVO 2020/639 point UAS.OPEN.060 "Responsibility of the remote pilot" 2. g))
